Struggling United held by Juventus

6 August 2008 23:35

Manchester United´s Argentinian forward Carlos Tevez (R) pulls away from Juventus´ Mauro Camoranesi during their pre-season friendly football match against Juventus at Old Trafford in Manchester. The match ended in a 0-0 draw.

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw by Juventus here on Wednesday night as Sir Alex Ferguson's injury-hit squad struggled to overcome the Italians.

United's lengthy casualty list, in the build-up to the new Premier League campaign, left manager Sir Alex Ferguson without a host of star names against the Italian giants.

Cristiano Ronaldo's ankle injury, Wayne Rooney's mystery virus and the injuries that have left Gary Neville, Owen Hargreaves, Michael Carrick and Ji-Sung Park on the sidelines have left Ferguson with a selection headache ahead of Sunday's Community Shield clash with Portsmouth at Wembley on Sunday.

The lack of attacking options, in particular, was evident against Claudio Ranieri's team and Carlos Tevez was once again forced to shoulder the goalscoring burden.

Tevez has endured a busy pre-season campaign, with this his sixth appearance already since the European champions returned to action at Aberdeen on July 12, and he has also been forced to deal with some heavy treatment from opposing defenders in his outings so far.

With Rooney and Ronaldo ruled out of the start of the season and Louis Saha seemingly not figuring in Ferguson's plans, Tevez is the only proven goalscorer available to the United manager, so he would have grimaced at the treatment being dished out the former West Ham forward by the Juventus defenders in the first-half.

Tevez was fortunate to escape a red card after reacting angrily to some over-zealous challenges during Saturday's victory over Espanyol and, although he continued to bear the brunt of some traditional Italian defending, Tevez kept his temper in check on this occasion.

However he did well to keep his cool following a scything tackle from behind by Nicola Legrottaglie midway through the first-half. Tevez writhed on the turf in agony, but he eventually rose to his feet to continue in the game.

But barring a 38th minute header from Darren Fletcher, that was well saved by goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, the first-half was devoid of goalscoring chances.

The European champions raised their game in the second-half, however, and midfielder Paul Scholes should have put United ahead when he was picked out on the edge of the six-yard box by substitute Rafael Da Silva on 51 minutes.

But former England midfielder Scholes somehow headed over the crossbar when it appeared easier to hit the target.

As the game wore on, neither team could find the breakthrough and United completed their pre-season preparations with a 0-0 draw against a team they could yet meet again in the Champions League this season.

Manure should change the name to "OneMan United". And we all know the name of the man. The only way to have ANY trophy without CR7 playing, is to buy it.

NewtonHeath, where are you.

If I remember correctly, yesterday you said that the Old Lady of Italian soccer would be taught a lesson at Old Trafford !!! What happened ??

Giorgio, I had a funny feeling I might be made to eat my words as soon as I posted the comment yesterday! I've only just responded because I was at the game last night and didn’t get home till late. In all honesty it was a lacklustre performance by both teams other than United's lively start it was more like a training match. I think Utd & Juve were both a little cautious and normal 50/50 challenges were approached tentatively with one eye cautious about picking up injuries. Juve were very stubborn in defence and credit to them on keeping a clean sheet. Van der Sar was a spectator for most of the match as Juve rarely troubled the United goalkeeper. There was a few positive's for United fans in that:

1. United have remained unbeaten in pre season, only Liverpool from the big four can also boast this but they still have Lazio to play on Friday, without the injured Gerrard (he still has a sore bum!) I must hasten to add!

2. A strong Juve side never really looked like scoring, we was our own downfall in not winning the match, but if we would have played with our first eleven on a competitive stage I personally believe we would have inflicted a heavy defeat on Juve.

3. We gave some young players an opportunity to play and Rafael Da Silva impressed me again as he did against Peterborough a few nights ago, he looks composed on the ball and was eager to get forward when the opportunity arisen.

In conclusion, I’m a happy United fan and feel comfortable and confident that United have more than enough in their armoury to defend their titles this season!

I have just watched the match and as Newtonheath has already mentioned, Juventus were very cautious and Van Der Sar had hardly anything to do. It gave us a chance to see some of the new boys in the second half and Rafael Da Silve really does look "the business". Overall not a struggling United as the headline suggests, but a United side having a steady workout against a good strong team. I should image most Old Trafford fans will be happy with the performance for a pre-season friendly and are looking forward to our first trophy this Sunday coming.

26 lines of bla-bla between newtonheath1878 and the intelectual guru phughes699 in a vain effort to disguise the fact that OneMan Utd was just average. Total waste of bandwidth.

Ajax72, I'm still waiting for your informed report on your crushing victory over Sunderland a few days ago, but still no reply??? It must be very frustrating for you Bandwagon boy that the mighty Ajax (ha ha) didn't even get a mention on Soccerway. Maybe the Editors felt that women’s Olympic football was a little more important! By the way, my report on the above was my honest opinion based on my perceptions of actually physically BEING at the match. Ajax72, have you got your TV remote, armchair positioned and your fridge stocked for the forthcoming season Bandwagon Boy? Or are you going to pop along and watch your local team? The reason why I ask is that you have the audacity to criticise the fans and teams of wealthy clubs but if you stopped, stood back and took a close look at your own actions (not supporting your local side) this may possibly be the route cause of the problem. You informed me not so long ago that your affiliation to Ajax was formed in the late 60’s when Ajax played your local side and you admired their style of play, “the rest was history” I think your words were. Ajax72, I have watched and admired many good footballing sides over the years but you don’t see me donning Liverpool or Nottingham Forest scarves do you?
