Rooney to miss start of season with virus

AFP - 5 August 2008 16:38

Man Utd´s Wayne Rooney sets himself up to score against Kaizer Chiefs´ goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune during a friendly match at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria, July 2008. Wayne Rooney will miss the start of the Premier League season after contracting a virus during the club´s pre-season trip to Nigeria, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed.

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - Wayne Rooney will miss the start of the Premier League season after contracting a virus during Manchester United's pre-season trip to Nigeria, manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed on Tuesday.

The striker has felt too weak to train since United returned from Africa last week and Ferguson expects to be without the England star when the European champions kick-off against Newcastle on August 17.

With Cristiano Ronaldo already sidelined for several weeks after ankle surgery, Rooney's absence is a major blow for Ferguson heading into the new campaign.

"I doubt if we'll get Rooney fit for the start of the season with the virus he's had," Ferguson told Sky Sports News.

"It's a virus he picked up in Nigeria and it's not a nice one, but quite a few have had it.

"It's such a bad virus and he's got to be training to be fit."

Ferguson, who insisted Rooney was not suffering from malaria, now has only Carlos Tevez, Louis Saha and Fraizer Campbell to choose his forward line from.

The United boss also insisted again that there was no chance of Ronaldo being allowed to join Real Madrid.

"The matter is now closed. Trust me he will play here next season," Ferguson said.

Shouldn't take almost 12 days to recover from a virus and these guys get top medical attention, it should be gone in days at the most.

He most probably picked up the virus at that restaurant in London where he had the spitting fit.

I bet it'll be a long while before Man U goes back to Nigeria for pre-season training.

Tough break for the Wonder Boy. Lets hope he recovers quickly.

Really, this is just like a handicap, so that the other teams in the Premiership will think they are doing well.

At least it is only the Geordies for the first match

Funny that Ajax, here's a stat for you. United lost 7 times in all competitions last season. Rooney didn't take part in any of those 7 games.

Just a thought Ajax!

There may be more to this than we know: sorry someone has a virus, but a lot of players have played through the flu and things. That Ferguson's one to play mind games and protect his players if he can.

English players aren't accustomed to having Nigerian viruses. Rooney needs as much time as he can to recover, because it's a disease his body has likely never experienced before....

And besides, with viruses, the body has to fight the disease...you can't just give him antibiotics and send him on his way. It takes time. Get well soon, Roo!

Quite a few, but are they missing games too?

And I say that not lightly, last winter, early spring a virus went around and did affect a lot of people.

It could be a ruse to get the extra striker they want too, I heard seems a valid point, that Berbatov guy.

NewtonHeath: Wow! Nothing I said about Belgium being the red devils is near as insulting with what you guys are coming up with. It's fine with me, but this may be where SW steps in and tells us to cool such talk.

Bubble blower, it is all tongue in cheek my friend. The season is about to start and there is nothing more enjoyable than having a dig at my scouse rivals. If you were to be in my office here in England believe you me you would be hearing a lot worse. We have a combination of United, City, Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle and Villa fans add many other fans of clubs from the lower leagues and I'm sure you can imagine the type of banter that goes on!

I guess ManU have learnt that it's counterproductive to take their team to some shit-hole in Central Africa for pre-season training !!!!!!!!

phughes699

7 August 2008 11:26

Not at all, they made over a million pounds visiting Nigeria, and won over lots of supporters too. Very good business indeed.

Giorgio

7 August 2008 12:39

phughes699,

Of course, what I was referring to is Wayne Rooney contracting some African virus, and that it will take him 12 days to recover. Hopefully he's not seriously ill.

And in my opinion a player's halth is worth very much more than lots of new fans and a million pounds.

phughes699

7 August 2008 13:30

You don't have to go to Africa to pick a virus up. You can catch a virus in your own community. To say that Manchester United will have learned a lesson is stupid and ridiculous. If everyone thought like you, nobody would go anywhere. The whole ideal of football is that it is a world game and countries like "the shithole" you talked about are delighted when teams like Manchester United visit them. A great experience for the fans and the players. I'm quite sure their drinks and food were carefully vetted and feel Rooney and Carrick were just basically unlucky.

Giorgio

7 August 2008 14:05

No, of course, you don't have to go to Africa to pick up a virus. However, the likelyhood of contracting a virus, or some serious tropical disease like malaria, is infinitely greater in central Africa than in Europe. Nevertheless , you seem to know better.

And I'm willing to bet that ManU will not go back to Nigeria, regardless of what you may think or say !!!

ajax72

7 August 2008 16:26

Giorgio, I'm far from giving you advices, but I think that ANYthing you might ever say here will be completely wasted on the OneMan Utd fans. They are so obsessed with their wanna-be-great club that they won't listen to reason.

Giorgio

7 August 2008 16:38

Ajax,

I agree with you 100%, in the sense that, with some individuals, it's a total waste of time and energy to exchange views.

It most definitely is, in this case.

Goal has an article that the organisers of the 3 game tour through Africa are upset at this story. So, this is a new chapter. The organisers called it a "lie from the pit of hell"! Strong words. I guess they are saying it gives Nigeria a BAD RAP. Sounds plausible to me.

When did Wayne Rooney ever become a footballing great, he is nothing more than an overrated british media hyped pylon. United will not win this season no matter who is in the lineup. Get a clue MU fans!!!!

Escape_to_Victory

The Nigerian organisers are saying bollocks to the idea Rooney contracted Montezuma's revenge in Lagos. I may not have made that clear. As for Rooney, like him or not, I wonder what the most posted story here on soccerway has been. This is getting up there but one more day and it will have to be searched out in the archives.
