Van Nistelrooy no longer available for Dutch team

Ruud van Nistelrooy during Euro 2008

MADRID (SW) - Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will no longer be available for the Dutch national team. This was announced by the Dutch FA on Monday.

The 32 year old forward talked to Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk earlier today, and told the manager that we would not be available any longer.

The player commented on his decision: "After studying the scheduled of Real Madrid and the Dutch team, I realized that looking at the required physical effort to perform well at that level, a choice had to be made.

"The combination of the league, cup and Champions League matches of Real Madrid on one hand and the schedule of the Dutch team on the other, is too heavy for me.

"It leaves me with no other choice. Of course you don't easily make such decisions. I had a really good European Championship with 'Oranje' and I look back with a good feeling," the player concluded.

Van Marwijk did not see the decision coming: "I had a long talk with Ruud and the only thing I can and want to do is respect his decision. Of course it's a shame that I can't use his qualities and international experience. I hope that Ruud will do great at Real Madrid."

Van Nistelrooy made his first international appearance in a friendly with Germany in 1998. After missing Euro 2000 as result of injury, the player did represent the national team at Euro's 2004 and 2008 and the 2006 World Cup.

In 64 matches for the Dutch team, Van Nistelrooy scored 33 goals.

He might be one of those blokes who come out of retirement and back to the team. Clearly, Netherlands is loaded with talented players but they still might need him.

Another loser who places the interests of a club ahead of the national team. I would have given my life to play for Italy in the World Cup in 1962 in Chile. We could have won it if I were included in the national team!

Tonto, it's like this since football became profession. They can't stop playing for their clubs in order to dedicate themselves to the national team, can they. And don't forget the guy is over 32.

Ajax, I know it's like this now, but I still believe that the greatest honor for a player is to play for the national team!

it will be a shame not seeing him with Oranje again, but his decision makes sense.

İndeed his decision makes sense. İf i were him i would do the same what he did.

Tonto, of course its the biggest honor for a player who plays for national team but he is not young, pyscially and mentally he could not able to play for both side, Rm and Oranges. At the same time he gives oppurtunity to youngsters playing instead of him.

RVN is 31: yeh, he's really going to need a walker to get around on the pitch!

No guys!, 'm sorry, but his decision does not make any sense. Van Nistelrooy quit the national team because he makes more money playing fot Real Madrid. Shame on him! Cannavaro is much older that Van Nistelrooy, but he still dream of playing for Italy!

Big loss for Holland. Some of Van Nistelrooy's best efforts are in the midfield, creating attacking chances for others as well as putting the ball in the back of the net

Look how loyal Barcelona was to Ronaldinho: MUFC was to Ruud: and a new Dutch coach, I know that RVN had had problems some with MVB. I'm sorry that he's bowing out.

tonto, players dont care about "honor" as much as money. and you dont have a contract to your national team. and theres no real international tournaments until 2010, by the van nistelrooy will be 35 (tell me if im wrong)

Fred, I'm pretty tied on this debate! Your comments on "honour to play for your country" are just, but, if the man feels he no longer has the physical attributes to continue playing for both then unfortunately he has to give up international football, obviously if he gave up club football he wouldn’t be considered for national selection as there would be no way for the national manager to assess his form etc. On the other hand, only Ruud knows the real reasons for retiring from international football. He states that the programme is too heavy for him, I find this hard to believe considering the fitness levels of footballers today. A shining example of honesty in football today is Paul Scholes who retired from international duty at a mere 29 years old but was honest enough to say that he wanted to spend more time with his young family and he felt that there was good enough players coming through the ranks in the English Squad to fill his boots!

Ruud has been a good servant to his country over the years, so there is no need to look down on him now he is older and feels it is too much for him now. He is the one that knows best, and if his decision is to give up playing for his country, please respect it.

Guys, "My mind's made up. Don't confuse me with facts." (Old Canadian saying)

Obviously, most people remember Ruud Van Nistelrooy's play in the Euro Cup as opposed to Portugal's boy wonder.

Most known African Player ever in the World Cup: Roger Milla (after of course, legend Eusebio who played for a European team) star of '90, look how old he was back then: Zidane, look how they couldn't get Lothar Mattheus to hang 'em up. Beckham goes on admirably.

He must be like Totti and Scholes and have his individual reasons to bow out. I can see how the travel schedule of qualifiers can be stressful and both Scholes and Totti have had problems with injuries.
