Van der Vaart completes Real Madrid move

Jonathan Roorda - 4 August 2008 14:04

Rafael van der Vaart

MADRID (SW) - Rafael van der Vaart is Real Madrid's fifth Dutch player. This was announced on the mid-fielder's official website.

Real Madrid reportedly pay around 13 million Euros for the player, with Hamburger SV earning an additional fee for possible successes in the coming season. The total fee therefore could increase to 15 million.

Van der Vaart could not hide his enthusiasm in the statement issues on his official website: "As everybody might know I have always wanted to move to Spain, because I have a strong bond with that country. Now I'm going to play for Real Madrid... it's a dream come true!"

The midfielder, who began his career at Ajax before becoming a key player at German side Hamburger SV, also thanked his current employer:

"Looking back at the last couple of years, I'm extremely happy that I've had the chance to experience playing for HSV. No club, and no set of fans will treat you with more hospitality than they do! Thanks very much for that."

The player went on to say that the presentation is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Well done Ajax, living up to your feeder club credentials!

The star factory working at full capacity. After Milan under Sacchi, it's now RM that will be driven by an Ajax/Dutch powerhouse. With it Milan won back to back 2 CL and 2 Intercontinental Cups. RM can do even better.

newtonheath1878, thank God there are clubs like Ajax to produce quality players. If it depended on manure's production the game would have been dead long ago.

Ajax, I knew you wouldn't be able to resist.

I know you are not really into long winded posts but below is a little poem about how wrong somebody can be about United's Youth Policy.

Owed to Alan Hansen (You'll Never Win Anything With Kids)

You'll never catch Newcastle; they're the best team in the land.

Maybe Liverpool will push them, but it's really in their hands.

You've sold your best three players; your defence is on the skids,

I've said it all along you don't win anything with kids.

Eric was suspended, Andy Cole was shooting blanks,

The men who bet against you had their money in the banks.

12 points back and you were fighting for that Euro place,

I've said it all along, those kids will not last the pace.

With injuries to your back four, you had to take a chance,

But even William Prunier could not help you advance.

Where was the Saviour Chequebook of the Kevin's and the Roy’s?

I've said it all along you don't win anything with boys.

You won some games but surely 'luck' like this can't be sustained.

The others started dropping points, the race would be maintained.

Liverpool then fell away, too much for them to do,

Let me remind you once again, your kids won't see it through.

The last few weeks would hold the key both on and off the field.

For it was in both places, that truths would be revealed.

Who would crack with the strain and who would rise above it,

Who can forget when Kevin said "I'll love it if we beat them, love it!"

So who would do it on the pitch, who'd get the vital goal?

Daveed? Tino? Ferdinand? No, May and Andy Cole.

Two much maligned players whose careers had been in trouble,

Found the net and found themselves half way to the Double.

The 'experts' in the BBC, decided 3 to 1.

The cup was there for Liverpool, just waiting to be won.

But no-one thought to tell the kids or Eric it was set.

A dreadful game, a brilliant spark, the Frenchman found the net.

They think that it's all over but it's only just begun.

The kids are here to dominate for years and years to come.

The next step now is Europe where each kid becomes a man,

But don't concern yourselves with that, just catch them if you can.

Ajax in 1996 Ajax, Fergie sold Mark Hughes, Paul Ince and Andrei Kanchelskis. Alan Hansen doubted United's ability to win with kids, both at the start of the season and on the morning of the Cup Final. This was written the day after the 1996 FA Cup Final. This team then went to win Europe’s biggest prize two seasons later, most of which were products of our own youth system, none of which we felt the need to sell!

you're an Ajax fan, right ?

what happened to the American defender, John O'Brien ?

is Ajax so hard-up they need to sell all their top players all these years ?

if they had been able to keep all the top players they've sold.............they'll be truly SCARY...........

That's just the way it goes in countries as Holland. Unfortunately, yes, but there's just not enough money in those leagues to keep players there.

The same happens to for example PSV. You all mention that Real Madrid is becoming an Ajax powerhouse, but Robben and Van Nistelrooy spent their last Dutch years at PSV (not in youth teams though), while Drenthe was a Feyenoord talent.

John O'Brien was a great left-back, regular for Ajax in 2000-2004. Unfortunately he was so injury-prone that he was not able to sustain his regular status and he went to ADO Den Haag. After a brief spell there he moved to MLS, C.D. Chivas where he played one season but further injuries forced him to give up football for good. His tough luck was bigger than even his talent. As for all the premarue sellings you should ask the club top management, because ordinary fans like me have absolutely no idea why. Just a shortlist of Ajax homegrown players still active, key players in their respective clubs: v.d. Sar, Chivu, Maxwell , Heitinga, Emanuelson, Maduro, Nigel de Jong, Sneijder, v.d. Vaart, Seedorf, Babel, Ibrahimovich. May be I've missed someone. As you can see this is a team that can successfully chalange the CL. To revert to the old winning times all they have to do is stop selling for 3-4 years players under 25. Well we have a new management and we are all hopeful they'll do only this-stop selling for a few years. The star factory will do the rest.

strani, I give full credit to PSV, Feyenoord and the other dutch clubs for their contribution to creation of talents. This is why a used "Ajax/Dutch" and not just "Ajax".

van der Vaart should do well in Madrid. Maybe he can keep Gago and those other garbage midfielders on the bench.
