Rio expecting Rooney to star this season

AFP - 3 August 2008 12:53

Man Utd´s Wayne Rooney sets himself up to score against Kaizer Chiefs´ goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune during a friendly match at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria, last month. Rio Ferdinand believes that his United and England team-mate Rooney will step out of Cristiano Ronaldo´s shadow and be the star of Old Trafford this season.

LONDON (AFP) - Rio Ferdinand believes that his Manchester United and England team-mate Wayne Rooney will step out of Cristiano Ronaldo's shadow and be the star of Old Trafford this season.

The 22-year-old was forced to take a supporting role last season as the Portuguese winger's 42 goals made him the leading man at Old Trafford.

But Ferdinand, United's captain last season in the absence of Gary Neville, believes Rooney's contribution to the team has been under-rated.

And if manager Sir Alex Ferguson plays Rooney in his favoured position more often from now on, the centre-half is confident the striker will soon be the main man.

"We've got to wait to see what will happen in the transfer market with regard to signing a new striker, but what Wayne did last season was staggering," Ferdinand told The People on Sunday.

"He had to take the responsibility of leading the line on his shoulders and he was awesome."

He added: "He played out of position a lot. He played on the left and sacrificed himself so many times for the team.

"I know the manager wants to see Wayne playing in his more accustomed position, just off the front.

"Maybe that will happen if we sign a striker and then you'll see how dangerous he can be."

I agree with Rio entirely. Rio obviously knows a lot about football strategy.

I just hope Rooney can control his spitting habit before the season starts. Rooney if you must spit on people, Liverpool players only, please.

If his shooting was even nearly as accurate as his spitting he'd have been the best striker of all times. Looney the spitting cobra.

If he doesn't do something stupid on the pitch, chances are he'll play in such a free-wheeling manner, he will end up being injured again.

Hahahahahaha!!!!! Rio you idiot, just keep your doping mouth shut. Roonney's best year already happened at Everton. He will not be able to ever even lick Ronaldo's shoes clean in any football sense, and he will struggle just to stay healthy. It's best United start to search out another future hyped up star for their lineup.

Players for the England National Team and it might pertain to other National Teams: often slap each other on the back like this. Let alone players for the same team. I don't keep up with it closely but hasn't Ronaldinho spoken up for Beckham in the last few years? It's a similar deal even if they played for different teams, they were plugging the Liga of Spain. It's a bit like a sales pitch.

I also happen to think that Rooney will be a brilliant star this year. The only problem is that I can't figure if it's going to be on the pitch or in the bar!

Escape to Victory, what has Beckham and Ronaldinho got to do with your statement, neither play for the same national team or club team (ever)? Is it the Pepsi connection?
