Quick Report: Manchester United 1-0 FC Barcelona

MANCHESTER, Apr 29 (SW) - Manchester United have reached the 2008 Champions League final thanks to a 1-0 victory over FC Barcelona at Old Trafford.

After the scoreless draw in Barcelona last week, Manchester needed to win to advance to the final, or at least draw without goals to go to extra time.

Bad defense from Gianluca Zambrotta allowed Paul Scholes to deliver a powerful shot in the 14th minute, and the short midfielder left Victor Valdes without a chance.

The two sides both kept attacking from there on, but really big chances were never created. Barcelona gave it their all in the second half, and especially in the final phase, but United survived thanks to a calm defense and cool goalkeeping by Edwin van der Sar.

Manchester last reached the final in 1999, when they beat Bayern Munich with two goals in stoppage time.

United's result against Barcelona, also means that the final in Moscow will be an English matter as the opponents will be either Liverpool or Chelsea.
