Silvio Berlusconi

ROME, Apr 24 (SW) - Recently elected Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi didn't need long to give his opinion on something football-related.

Berlusconi, who also is president of Serie A giants AC Milan, feels that his country needs a new league structure.

"The top teams should have their own league. If you invest so much in your team, it is unthinkable to let them play against teams from the province, where a 20,000 seats stadium is usually half empty," said Berlusconi.

"When the big teams play, the stadiums are always full and the television viewer ratings are huge. Only with these top teams we can become a European superpower again."

The businessman slash politician wants the smaller teams to have their own league as well.

Next to his jobs in politics and club management, Berlusconi also has a company which currently owns the television rights to Milan, Inter, AS Roma and Juventus.

i love the potential for football to be political, but lets not have politicians running football. he hasn't got a clue anyway, juve harldy fill up their own stadium as it is, and the big teams often get beat in the provinces so there's no grounding for this urban supremacism

Berlusconi cant expect to combine his new political role with his football position. G-14 was disbanded and now he wants to do a similar thing with the big Serie A teams. It will be like Game 39 in England and probably receive criticism from the smaller clubs who still deserve to play big teams within the league.
