Standard de Liège poised to end 25-year wait
R. Standard de Liège fans could be celebrating the club's first league championship success in a quarter of a century if results go their way on Sunday.
The Belgian league leaders host second-placed RSC Anderlecht knowing that a victory would be enough to clinch their first title since 1982/83 with three matches to spare provided third-placed Club Brugge fail to defeat KAA Gent on the same afternoon.
The eagerly-anticipated summit meeting at the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium has been sold out for months, with hundreds of trophy-starved supporters camping out overnight to snap up the last tickets back in February.
Anderlecht, meanwhile, will be hoping to make the most of Standard's inexperience when it comes to title races. Veteran midfielder Bart Goor, who has already won a quartet of titles with the Brussels club, believes the pressure could prove too much for Standard if they succeed in closing the gap to four points.
