Llanelli end long wait for Welsh crown

14 April 2008 16:00

Llanelli AFC were crowned Welsh champions for the first time in their 112-year history without even kicking a ball on Friday evening when title rivals The New Saints FC suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat at Airbus UK FC.

Peter Nicholas's side then celebrated in style by defeating Connah's Quay Nomads FC today, with forward Rhys Griffiths claiming the only goal of the game to lift his seasonal tally in all competitions to 53. Having taken TNS's crown – the Oswestry-based club had won the title for the past three seasons – the league could be the first part of a domestic treble this season for Llanelli. They face Rhyl FC in the League Cup final on 27 April, before they take on Bangor City FC on 4 May for the Welsh Cup.
