Champions League update: Liverpool hold Arsenal, Fener shock Chelsea

Jonathan Roorda - 2 April 2008 22:58

Deivid de Souza made up for his own goal

LONDON/ISTANBUL, Apr 2 (SW) - Liverpool will consider themselves winners after a 1-1 draw in London and Fenerbahçe's Champions League dreams are still alive after a home win over Chelsea.

The thousands of spectators at Emirates Stadium witnessed an active match, in which Arsenal took the lead after 22 minutes. Robin van Persie took a corner kick from the right, combined with Fabregas and then crossed the ball right onto Emmanuel Adebayor's head.

But the Londoners were given no longer than three minutes to enjoy their lead as hard work from Steven Gerrard was rewarded by Dirk Kuijt, who converted his captain's assist for 1-1.

Arsenal deserved a penalty in the second half but referee Vink gave fellow Dutchman Kuijt the benefit of the doubt.

In Istanbul meanwhile, things were going as planned for Chelsea, be it with some help from Deivid de Souza who scored an own goal in English advantage after 12 minutes.

Chelsea refused to decide the game however and allowed the Turkish hosts to find their way back into the game. Kazim-Richards equalized in the 64th minute and - from villain to hero - Deivid de Souza scored the winning goal at ten minutes from the end.

The second legs in these quarter finals will be played on April 8th.
