US needs more goals, says women´s football coach

20 September 2007 09:35

SHANGHAI (AFP) - The United States are hoping to rediscover their scoring touch in the women's World cup quarter-final clash with England on Saturday.

"We're not getting the luck of the bounce at the moment," head coach Greg Ryan said as the team left here for Tianjin.

While they scored 11 goals against the same three opponents in the first round of the 2003 World Cup, this time they have hit the target just five times.

"We're just in a bit of a dry patch, and all teams go through those. At some point the chances we're creating are going to have to start falling and we're just hoping it's soon."

The US women scraped through 1-0 against Nigeria during a downpour caused by Typhoon Wipha on Tuesday. They drew 2-2 with North Korea and beat Sweden 2-0 to top the group but their goal tally looks unimpressive compared to other teams like Germany and Brazil.

Veteran striker Kristine Lilly admits that the two-time world champions and world number ones have yet to find their form in China.

"We're delighted with the amount of points we've put together, but we're not thrilled with the way we've played," the US captain said.

"We need to hold on to the ball better and move it around better if we want to beat the English."
