BUCHAREST (AFP) - Romania's National Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office (DNA) confirmed on Wednesday they are in the process of finalising their investigation into alleged match-fixing and tax evasion in the country's league.
"Prosecutors who asked for proof from judicial bodies in European and Asian countries by letters of request have received answers to most of their queries," the DNA said in a statement.
The probe, covering the period 1990-2006, was launched in March 2006.
It has investigated several clubs and agents suspected of not declaring millions of euros earned through transfers including that of strikers Adrian Mutu from Dinamo Bucharest to Inter Milan in 2000 and Florin Bratu from Rapid Bucharest to Turkish side Galatasaray in 2003.
Prosecutors are also examining allegations of match-fixing and in particular an affair going back to April 2006 when Steaua Bucharest boss Gigi Becali offered 10,000 euros to every player from Gloria Bistrita if they beat Rapid Bucharest and prevented them from leading the first division standings.
Dinamo Bucharest chairman Cristian Borcea appeared before the DNA on Wednesday while Becali and Rapid president George Copos both gave evidence on Monday.
