SEVILLE, Spain (AFP) - Sevilla kept up their momentum for progression into the Champions League knock-out stages with a 2-1 win over Steaua Bucharest.
The result left the Spanish team second in Group H on six points behind unbeaten leaders Arsenal, while Steaua are bottom with Czech team Slavia Prague third on three points. Sevilla will at least head into their last home game of the group, against Arsenal on November 27 in good spirits. In the first-half against the Romanians, Sevilla showed some of the nice touches that was a trademark of their play last season, but needlessly caused panic among their ranks after conceding a goal with 27 minutes to go. Sevilla opened the scoring through Frederic Kanoute after five minutes, the Mali striker rising beautifully to head home a perfect crosss from Capel. The Spainards doubled their lead 10 minutes later, Brazilian Luis Fabiano, scorer of a double at the weekend against Levante, dribbling through the defence and scoring despite pressure from Nigerian defender Ifeanyi Emeghara. Ovidiu Petre pulled back a goal for the visitors but Sevilla battened down the hatches to cling on to their tender lead and hopes for a second-placed finish in the group. "We played a great game," said Fabiano. "In the second-half, they tried everything, changing their gameplan. We suffered trying to close down the spaces but we battled and claimed the win. It was important to win at home." Coach Juande Ramos said he had been pleased with his side's showing in the first 45 minutes. "We played a magnificent first-half," he said. "We played a lot down the wings, that was what we wanted. "Now we have to win in Bucharest to practically ensure our qualification. Wins are always welcome, but we have to keep working." |
