McClaren vows to go for Russia´s jugular

LONDON (AFP) - Steve McClaren has vowed that England will go to Russia on Wednesday looking for the win that would book their place in Euro 2008 with a game to spare.
A draw on the Russians' artificial surface would leave McClaren's men needing no more than a draw from their final group E match, at home to Croatia in November. But after watching his side ease past Estonia with their fifth consecutive 3-0 win in the group, McClaren insisted he would be looking to wrap up qualification with a game to spare. "We have just won our last five games 3-0, we beat Russia 3-0 a few weeks ago and there is a lot of belief and confidence in this squad. "Wherever we go, we go to win. It is an opportunity -- what a great opportunity to win the game and qualify." Saturday's comfortable win was offset by the probable loss of first-choice left-back Ashley Cole for the Moscow trip. The Chelsea defender limped off early in the second half with a serious-looking ankle injury and McClaren admitted: "It does not look good." The coach was more optimistic about skipper John Terry's chances of returning from a knee injury for England's biggest match since the 2006 World Cup quarter-final. McClaren said: "JT is a lot better again today and a lot more positive than he was on Thursday -- we are just hoping that come Monday he will be able to train." The coach shrugged off a pedestrian second-half display from his players at Wembley on Saturday, although that was understandable enough given that goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips and Wayne Rooney and an own goal by Taavi Rahn had ended any hope of a contest with barely half an hour gone. "We said before the match that, to make it easier, the first 20 minutes were going to be all important," McClaren said. "And we set off at good pace, a good tempo as we have been doing and got the three goals. "Then it was a case of 'we have won that game, bring on a few changes and make sure we're right for Wednesday. "We didn't perform very well in the second half but I can understand it is going to be flat. If you had told me before the game you will be three up after half an hour I'd have been delighted, so you can't criticise the performance." Estonia coach Viggo Jensen expects England to reach the finals along with Croatia, but warned that they would find life difficult on the artificial surface they will play on in Moscow. "I think it will be difficult for England on this astroturf. This could be the biggest problem for them because they will be worried about it. With the quality they have, on a normal pitch I don't think they would have a problem." Rooney's goal was his first in a competitive international since he was terrorising the cream of Europe's defences at Euro 2004. The goal itself, a shot on the turn from Joe Cole's cross that needed a deflection off a defender's boot to beat the goalkeeper, was hardly a vintage strike but both McClaren and Rooney admitted their relief that the Manchester United man had got back on the goal trail. McClaren's decision to leave Frank Lampard on the bench for nearly 70 minutes was vindicated by a man-of-the-match display by Gareth Barry in the holding role, although the limitations of Estonia ensured this was a far from exacting test of the Aston Villa captain's credentials. Barry was involved in the build-up to England's first goal, Wright-Phillips firing through Mart Poom's legs from close range after being played in by Micah Richards. Then, less than two minutes after Rooney's strike, Rahn attempted to intercept Ashley Cole's cross from a deep position on the left and succeeded in sending an unstoppable header into the net via the inside of Poom's right-hand post. England's comfortable advantage enabled McClaren to rest Rio Ferdinand for the second half and hand Joleon Lescott his first cap. The Everton defender did not have the happiest of introductions to the international stage however, his mistake forcing Ashley Cole into the last-ditch challenge which resulted in his injury. Lescott could be asked to deputise in Moscow but McClaren also has Reading's Nicky Shorey as cover at left-back. |
