Kahn hits back at Lehmann criticism

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - Bayern Munich captain and former German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn hit back on Thursday at criticism by Germany's current shot-stopper Jens Lehmann.

Arsenal goalkeeper Lehmann took a swipe at Kahn, who he replaced as national 'keeper at last year's World Cup, when he told German magazine Der Speigel last week that Kahn "takes himself far too seriously and thinks he is very important".

But Kahn, back in Germany after surgery in the United States for a painful elbow injury, replied by saying Lehmann should be grateful he is in the national side as he is currently warms the bench at the north London club.

"Perhaps rather than talk about former colleagues, he should be grateful he has the chance to play in the national team while he doesn't play for his club," Kahn told football magazine Kicker.

"That has never happened before in the history of German football."

Kahn drew Lehmann's wrath last week by stating he doubts there will be another era of goalkeeping legends such as Sepp Maier, Toni Schumacher, Bodo Illgner or even himself, in the German team again.

"I don't like it when someone glorifies themself," said 37-year-old Lehmann in reply.

The German is on the bench at Arsenal even though he has recovered from elbow and achilles tendon injuries with Spain's Manuel Almunia wearing Arsenal's number one shirt.

But Lehmann is expected to play for Germany against the Republic of Ireland in Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said he is close to winning his first-team place back.
