Hibs go top as Rangers fall to earth

6 October 2007 19:01

GLASGOW (AFP) - Rangers were brought down to earth with a bump on Saturday as Hibernian extended their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win at Ibrox that lifted the Edinburgh club to the top of the Scottish Premier League.

The contrast between this lacklustre performance and Rangers' stunning 3-0 win at French champions Lyon in the Champions League in midweek could scarcely have been greater.

The decisive moment in a match painfully devoid of goalmouth action came just after the hour mark.

Felipe Morais swung in a corner and defender David Murphy rose above the home side's defence to head the ball past Allan McGregor in the Rangers goal.

Rangers had enjoyed marginally the better of a listless opening half in which Charlie Adam, restored to the side at the expense of Lee McCulloch, squandered a couple of good chances to give them the lead.

The left-sided midfielder had already wasted a free-kick in a threatening position and blasted over from close range after a good knockdown by Kris Boyd.

Then, right on the stroke of half-time, a punched clearance from Hibs goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay fell invitingly but Adam's shot was wayward.

Adam was presented with an almost identical chance just before Hibs took the lead, but on this occasion he at least managed to force Ma-Kalambay to tip his effort over the bar.

Rangers looked as if they were getting on top at that stage but Murphy's first goal in two years took the wind out of their sails.

The win sent Hibs two points clear at the top of the table but Celtic can reclaim the lead with victory at bottom side Gretna on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Hearts made it a good day for both Edinburgh sides with a 4-2 win against Falkirk at Tynecastle.

Dundee United beat Motherwell 1-0 at Tannadice while Kilmarnock shared the points with Inverness Caledonian Thistle after a 2-2 draw at Rugby Park.
