BERLIN (AFP) - Schalke 04 coach Mirko Slomka is up against his former club Hanover, where he spent ten years as a youth team coach, when the Bundesliga sides clash in the German Cup on Tuesday.

Of the 16 second-round ties played this Tuesday and Wednesday, the draw has thrown up six all-first division Bundesliga clashes with Schalke and Hanover the biggest fixture of the round.

Schalke's 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Werder Bremen on Saturday leaves them fifth in the league with Hanover sixth, but Slomka's side have failed to win their last four games and are eager for victory.

"We want to lay down a clear marker," said Shalke striker Kevin Kuranyi.

Although Schalke have traditionally had a strong cup record, they have struggled of late beaten 4-2 by second-division Cologne last year in the second round and humbled 6-0 by Eintracht Frankfurt at the same stage the year before.

On Wednesday, defending Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart will need to build on Saturday's 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen - their first win in five games - and avoid a banana skin at home to second division bottom side Paderborn.

"We must build on our momentum," said Stuttgart coach Armin Veh, who also has to hold some of his squad back for the weekend's Bundesliga matches.

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich will again be without French midfielder Franck Ribery for their clash with second-division top side Borussia Moechengladbach on Wednesday at Munich's Allianz Arena.

"We have no fear," said Borussia midfielder Marcel Ndjeng.

"We are going there to win."

In the second round's other all-Bundesliga ties Borussia Dortmund take on Eintracht Frankfurt, while Karlsruhe host Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen take on Duisburg.

Defending cup holders Nuremberg take on FC Carl Zeiss Jena, who are second from bottom of the Bundesliga's second division, on Wednesday.
