US veteran Mathis to join Beckham in Galaxy midfield

19 November 2007 22:37

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - England star David Beckham will have some new help in the midfield for the Los Angeles Galaxy, which obtained US veteran Clint Mathis from the New York Red Bulls on Monday.

The Galaxy sent a third-round selection in January's Major League Soccer Draft to New York in exchange for the 30-year-old American, who began his pro career with Los Angeles in 1998.

Mathis was the leading scorer in franchise history for the Red Bulls, once known as the MetroStars, with 45 goals. He scored six goals in 29 games for New York this year.

Mathis was on the US national team from 1998 through 2005, earning 46 caps and scoring 12 goals, and played in the 2002 World Cup when the US squad made the final eight.

His club career also included a Bundesliga season for Hannover 96 and MLS campaigns at Real Salt Lake and Colorado.
