Arena resigns as Red Bulls manager

SECAUCUS, United States (AFP) - Former US national team coach Bruce Arena resigned on Monday as manager of Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls.

His move came less than two days after the Red Bulls were eliminated from the MLS postseason, falling 1-0 to the New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

Arena - who guided the United States to the 2002 World Cup quarter-finals - said his departure was a mutual decision with team managing director Marc de Grandpre.

"Marc and I discussed the direction of the team and decided mutually that this was the best move for Red Bull New York," said Arena, who has managed the team for 1 1/2 seasons.

"I wish the organization the best of luck going forward."

Against New England in the playoffs, the Red Bulls were held to a 0-0 draw in the first leg before losing 1-0 on Saturday.

"We've made progress this season, but it is not where we want to be," de Grandpre said.

"We made a promise to our fans to provide the best quality product on the field. Unfortunately, we haven't achieved that promise to this point.

"Thus, we've come to a mutual agreement to part ways. I want to thank Bruce for his hard work. I am certain that he will have success in his future endeavours."
