Newcastle lose Barton for six weeks

23 July 2007 00:59

NEWCASTLE, England (AFP) - Newcastle suffered another injury blow on Sunday when England midfielder Joey Barton was ruled out for six weeks after breaking a metatarsal in his left foot.

The 24-year-old picked up the injury in Saturday's 1-1 friendly draw at Carlisle and with the club opening their Premiership season at Bolton on August 19, he will miss the opening weeks of the new campaign.

"Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton will have an operation on Monday after suffering a foot injury during Saturday's pre-season friendly at Carlisle United," said a statement on the club's official website.

"The England international, who was skipper for the 1-1 draw at Brunton Park, sustained a partial fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his left foot.

"The Magpies expect Joey to return in six weeks."

Barton was bought for 5.8 million pounds from Manchester City and only made his debut for Newcastle at Hartlepool on Tuesday.
