UAE ruin Qatar´s Asian Cup

16 July 2007 16:34

HO CHI MINH CITY (AFP) - Faisal Khalil ruined Qatar's Asian Cup ambitions Monday with his last minute winner earning United Arab Emirates a 2-1 victory to prevent their Gulf neighbours making the quarter-finals.

With Vietnam being beaten by Japan in the other group B match, Qatar needed to win to ensure a passage into the knockout rounds, but it wasn't to be and they now face an early flight back to Doha.

A first half penalty by Uruguay-born Sebastian Quintana Soria gave Qatar hopes but Al Sharjah striker Saeed Al Kaas brought them down to earth with a well-placed header on 59 minutes.

Faisal Khalil rubbed salt in their wounds when he pounced on a rebound from an Ismail Matar free kick in stoppgae time to consign Qatar to the bottom of the group.

The UAE looked like a demoralised team in the first half, playing only for pride and not playing for that very well.

The match started poorly with loose passes and no clear cut chances in the first 10 minutes before Qatar found their footing and began to threaten.

Soria was unlucky not to give them the lead in the 13th minute when he had a goal disallowed for offside. Coach Dzemaludin Musovic was furious at the decision and remonstrated with the linesman to no avail.

Soira was the danger man and he nodded a chance just over the bar two minutes later.

UAE were rudderless and suspect in defence as Qatar pushed forward.

Former Manchester City winger Hussain Yasser, returning from a one match ban, almost broke the deadlock midway through the half, turning beautifully to unleash a fierce shot that grazed the bar.

But the frustration of failing to find the net was starting to take its toll and Soria was fortunate to stay on the park after angrily throwing the ball at the linesman after a decision went against him.

It rebounded off the official's legs and a yellow card was all he got.

He made amends five minutes before the break when he was brought clattering to the ground by Rashid Abdul Rahman after a weaving run into the box.

He slotted his first penalty attempt into the right hand corner but was forced to take it again. This time he whacked it into the roof of the net, giving goalkeeper Waleed Salem no chance.

The UAE had a new lease of life in the second period and were duly rewarded when Saeed Al Kaas rose to meet a cross from Ahmed Mubarak, heading it beyond the outstretched arms of Mohamed Saqr.

The Asian Games champions threw everyone forward in a desperate bid to find the winner, but the UAE hung on grimly and sneaked a late winner.
