Copa America: Favourites Impose Themselves

9 July 2007 16:06

As cries of 'olé' rang out across Venezuela during this weekend's Copa America quarter-finals extravaganza, football fans across the globe were left licking there lips at the mouthwatering goal feast put on by South America's best.

22 goals to savour, 18 different goal scorers, and 4 absolute thrashings.

Spell-bound by the array of talent and brilliance of the Argentines in their 4-0 demolition of Peru, Peruvian coach Julio Cesar Uribe said, "Argentina had the variations and superior talent and we were well and truly beaten. It's part of football." He further added, "They are a great team and they have a great bench as well," obviously in awe of the wealth in talent that graces the Argentine bench including, Manchester United target Carlos Tevez, Real Zaragoza's Pablo Aimar, Real Madrid's Fernando Gago, and Boca Juniors marksman Rodrigo Palacio.

Uribe's 'excitement' was also matched by Argentine coach Alfio Basile who said after the game, "I was delighted by the way we played our football, It's not just about winning. You can simply win a game, but to win the way we are doing makes me proud."

So All hail the beautiful game as we move on to the semi-finals where Brazil will take on 14 time Copa America winners Uruguay, while the pretenders to the throne Mexico, who have never won the Copa, take on favourites Argentina. This match will serve as a rematch of the Germany 2006 World Cup 2 nd round battle which saw the Argentines triumph 2-1 in an epic battle after extra-time when Argentine midfielder Maxi Rodriguez sealed the deal with a sublime volley.
