Dutch keeper Waterreus joins MLS Red Bulls

29 January 2007 20:39

NEW YORK (AFP) - Former Dutch national team goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus signed with the New York Red Bulls, the Major League Soccer club announced.

Waterreus helped PSV Eindhoven to Dutch titles in 1997, 2000, 2001 and 2003 during a 10-season career before stays at Manchester City of the English Premiership and Glasgow Rangers.

"We´ve added a goalkeeper with a lot of experience," Red Bulls coach Bruce Arena said. "We are hopeful he will assume a leadership role in the locker room which will be beneficial to us."

Waterreus, 36, joins countryman Dave van den Bergh, who obtained a deal with Kansas City earlier this month, on the Red Bulls roster.

"It has been one of my goals to play here in the United States," Waterreus said. "I spoke to Bruce Arena about being someone who has played at a high level in Europe and can use that experience to lead and help the younger players with the club. I am looking forward to that."

Waterreus earned seven caps for the Dutch, one of them a 2-0 blanking of the US squad. He made 11 saves in that friendly before the 2002 World Cup.
