Nedved saves Juve´s blushes

27 January 2007 19:24

ROME (AFP) - A goal in the second minute of stoppage time from Czech midfielder Pavel Nedved salvaged a 1-1 draw for Serie B leaders Juventus at Spezia as the season reached its halfway stage.

The home side were leading through Simone Confalone´s first-half header before Juve had midfielder Giuliano Giannichedda sent off for two yellow cards in the 79th minute.

Spezia spurned several good chances to secure the three points before Nedved equalised for the 10 men with a low drive from the edge of the 18-yard box.

A draw left Juventus on 39 points from their 21 games played, two clear of second-placed Bologna who won 1-0 at home to Albinoleffe.

Nedved admitted Spezia had given his side a run for their money.

"This is a very difficult place to come and get anything, so we are very pleased to take a point," Nedved told Sky Italia.

"Perhaps Spezia deserved more than a draw. They are very dangerous at home. The pitch is very small and they don´t give you any space."

Juventus were relegated to Italy´s second division and given a nine-point handicap for their role in the Serie A match-fixing scandal.
