Manchester City confirm release of US-bound Reyna

23 January 2007 13:29

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - Manchester City has confirmed that they have agreed to terminate the contract of American midfielder Claudio Reyna to allow the veteran midfielder to return to the United States.

Reyna, whose pregnant wife has already moved back to the States, is expected to join Major League Soccer outfit the New York Red Bulls.

His recent time at City has been blighted by injury and he has not played for the Premiership club since a defeat by Tottenham in December.

He joined City from Sunderland in 2003 for 2.5 million pounds (five million dollars) and went on to make 77 league appearances, scoring four goals.

A move to the Red Bulls will see Reyna, 33, reunited with former United States coach Bruce Arena, who is now head coach at the club.

Reyna retired from international football after winning the last of his 112 caps while playing in his third World Cup finals, in Germany last summer.
