Dinamo Zagreb cancel injured Nowotny´s contract

12 January 2007 14:20

ZAGREB (AFP) - Dinamo Zagreb have said they have cancelled the contract of German defender Jens Nowotny, who suffered a severe knee injury six months after joining the top Croatian club.

"The story with Jens Nowotny is finished. We have reached an agreement on the cancelling of the contract without compensation," Dinamo spokesman Neven Cvijanovic told AFP Friday.

Nowotny had agreed to receive only the wages he was owed for the first half of the season, amounting to some 350,000 euros (450,000 dollars), said Cvijanovic.

Dinamo Zagreb, the current Croatian league leaders, had signed the former German international for three years in June last year in what was then considered the biggest transfer in the club´s history.

The 32-year-old arrived from German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen after 10 years of service.

He played 12 matches before suffering a serious injury to his right knee in August, after which he underwent an operation in Zagreb.

But his condition requires another operation in Germany.

"In the last few matches for Dinamo, I played with pain," Nowotny was quoted as saying in the newspaper Vecernji List.

"Medical tests in Germany showed that another operation is necessary," he added.
