PHOENIX, Arizona (AFP) - The United States has again kept Mexico scoreless on US soil as they beat their southern rivals 2-0 in a friendly international football match.
The defeat, with goals from Jimmy Conrad and Landon Donovan, spoiled Hugo Sanchez´s debut as coach of the Aztec and gave the US their second victory under the guidance of interim coach Bob Bradley. Conrad headed home in the 52nd minute, while Donovan used his speed to seal Mexico´s fate in injury time. For both teams the contest served as preparation for their principal competitions this year, the CONCACAF Gold Cup June 6-24 and the Copa America, June 26-July 15. The US stretched their unbeaten run against Mexico to eight meetings - including seven victories - since 2000. Mexico haven´t scored a goal on US soil in 753 minutes of playing time. The United States´ next matches are against Ecuador, March 25 in Tampa, Florida, and Guatemala, three days later in Frisco, Texas. Mexico face Venezuela on February 28 in San Diego, California, and play Ecuador in Oakland, California, on March 28. |
