Italian minister warns lawmakers to resist club pressure

ROME (AFP) - Interior Minister Giuliano Amato has warned lawmakers to resist pressure from Italy´s powerful football clubs if the government is to force compliance with security measures in the wake of fan violence which killed a policeman.
"There will be pressures for the show to go on, because state and club revenue depends on football. We have a duty to the police and to citizens to resist those pressures," Amato said. The minister addressed parliament four days after the death of a Carabinieri officer during clashes with fans Friday after a fixture between Sicilian rivals Catania and Palermo. Some 100 fans were injured in the clashes. He said 34 people, including 11 minors, had been arrested after the clashes between riot police and Catania supporters. "The peace of Italian families is more valuable than the economic interests which insist that the show must go on," the minister said in a sharp rebuke to the president of Italy´s Professional Football League Clubs association, Antonio Matarrese. Matarrese said Monday the death was "unfortunate" but called for matches to resume. He said in a newspaper interview: "Football should never be stopped. It´s the number one rule: football is the industry ... do you think there´s an industry that would close its factories and not know when they´re going to reopen?" The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is to decide when games can resume after a cabinet ministers´ meeting about new security measures on Wednesday. Following a government decree on Monday, football clubs will in the meantime be forced to play their matches behind closed doors if their stadium does not meet security requirements established under the previous government. Only four Italian stadiums are believed to have security that falls into line with the regulations, which include CCTV, named tickets, automatic turnstiles, adequate stewarding, and the banning of racist banners as well as fireworks and flares. La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that only two matches are likely to be played before crowds next weekend. |
