CAIRO (AFP) - Didier Notheaux has been dumped as coach of Benin ahead of a friendly against Senegal on Wednesday.

Put in charge of the ´Squirrels´ just two weeks ago, the 59-year-old is the latest Frenchman to be appointed and axed by a west African nation without having a chance to prove himself.

A change of football leadership in Togo last month triggered the bizarre situation where Patrice Neveu arrived in Lome to sign a contract only to be told he was no longer wanted.

A replacement for Notheaux, who succeeded unsuccessful local Edme Codjo, has not been named, leaving several Benin-based coaches in charge for the clash with 2002 World Cup quarter-finalists Senegal in the northern city of Rouen.

Originally scheduled to host Angola in Dakar, Senegal switched the fixture to neighbouring Gambia after police could not provide security owing to a clash with local elections.

The west Africans then infuriated the Angolans by cancelling the friendly, forcing the shock 2006 World Cup qualifiers to hastily arrange a game against Portuguese club Vitoria Setubal in Lisbon.

Togo go back to the future when they host four-time African champions Cameroon by putting former Nigeria defender Stephen Keshi in charge of the Sparrowhawks a second time.

Keshi transformed Togo from also-rans to World Cup qualifers before poor results at the 2006 African Nations Cup and public clashes with ace striker Emmanuel Adebayor led to his dismissal.

Former Dutch star Arie Haan quit as coach of Cameroon last weekend, citing interference from officials and the failure to include him in a delegation that watched the African youth championships in Congo.

African Nations Cup holders Egypt host Sweden in a fixture that forms part of the 50th anniversary celebrations this week of the formation of the Cairo-based African Football Confederation (CAF).

Egypt have called up recent Sheffield United signing, midfielder Ahmed Fathi, along with two other English Premiership players, midfieler Hossam Ghaly and striker Ahmed ´Mido´ Hossam from Tottenham Hotspur.

In other friendlies, 2004 Nations Cup winners Tunisia are away to runners-up Morocco in Rabat, Algeria host Libya in Algiers, and Rouen hosts another all-Africa affair as Ivory Coast take on Guinea.
