ROME (AFP) - The vast majority of Italian football matches will be played behind closed doors until further notice following the murder of the policeman on Friday, Italy´s interior minister said.
"There is no debate to be had about this matter," said Giuliano Amato after meeting with the sports minister, the president of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) and the president of the Italian Football Federation. The only stadiums permitted to allow fans will be those with video surveillance inside and outside the ground, numbered tickets, and a police post inside the stadium, as stipulated by law. According to Italian press reports, the only four stadiums which meet the requirements are the Olympic stadium in Rome (home to Lazio and AS Roma) the Olympic stadium in Turin (where disgraced football giants Juventus play) and those of Palermo and Siena. All football in Italy was suspended following the murder of Filippo Raciti, who was killed on Friday when a home made bomb was thrown into his car. Raciti -- whose funeral took place on Monday -- died after a home-made bomb was thrown into his car as police officers came under attack from Catania fans outside the Massimino stadium following the derby match against Palermo. |
