BIRMINGHAM, England (AFP) - Aston Villa on Friday signed West Bromwich Albion defender Curtis Davies on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill has been keen to sign Davies for several months and has finally got his man.

The England Under-21 centre-back is likely to agree a 10-million-pound switch to Villa Park when his loan expires at the end of the season.

Davies is convinced O'Neill can help turn him into one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

He said: "The manager's record speaks for itself. During his career he has turned people like Emile Heskey, Robbie Savage and Muzzy Izzet into great players and hopefully he can turn me into a gem as well.

"I looked at the squad list at Villa and eight of the players are or have been England Under-21 internationals. Hopefully we can all push each other through and play for England.

"When you see people like Ashley Young in the squad now it tells you that I have made the right move."

Davies hadn't played for the Championship club this season as he waited for his future to be resolved and Albion manager Tony Mowbray admitted it was in everyone's interests for the former Luton player to move on.

"Since our play-off defeat at Wembley last season, he clearly felt his future lay elsewhere," Mowbray said. "This has resulted in Curtis not wanting to play for the team this season.

"We only want players here who are fully committed to the cause."
