Real Madrid coach upbeat on Super Cup chances

18 August 2007 17:34

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid's new coach Bernd Schuster believes his side can still win the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday despite a 1-0 away defeat to Sevilla in the first leg.

"I think we will be capable of coming back from the first leg's bad result," he told a news conference.

"It (the Super Cup) is very special to me. I've never won a title as coach, so I really want to win it," he added.

The reigning Spanish champions head into the game having lost five matches in the pre-season which has led fans and Spain's sports press to question Schuster's tactics.

Daily sports newspaper AS suggested the German coach could leave Real captain and striker Raul on the bench while the role of midfielder Guti, whose future at the club is in doubt, has been the subject of much media speculation.

Schuster refused to lift the veil on the line-up he will use, saying only that it would be "conditioned the rival we will face".

"We have to score at least two goals, not concede them. That's what I was thinking when I was coming up with the line-up for tomorrow," he said.

"We are going to play many games this season and we have to prepare every player to be ready to play at any given time. There won't really be a line-up. Let's just say some players will play more than others," he added.

Asked if Guti would play for the team against Sevilla, he said: "We'll see tomorrow. People shouldn't obsess about Guti. We need all of our players. I'm relaxed because I have men capable of playing whenever I need them."

Sevilla has included Brazilian Daniel Alves, who is strongly linked to a move to Chelsea, in its squad but coach Juande Ramos has said he was not sure if he would use the right back.

Alves did not take part in Sevilla's 2-0 Champions League win over AEK Athens on Wednesday, reportedly in order to not hurt his chances of making the move to the English club.

Ramos will also be without his injured denders Javi Navarro and Julien Escude as well as midfielders Adriano and Antonio Puerta.

"It will be a difficult match but we are ready for everything and we are going to Madrid to win," said Sevilla's Serbian defender Vujica Dragutinovic.
