Del Horno’s World Cup in doubt

MADRID, May 26 (SW) - Spain’s national team doctor, Dr. Genaro Borras, has said that defender Asier Del Horno may miss the entire World Cup tournament due to an injury sustained on Wednesday.

Del Horno pulled up with an ankle injury during the work out session and the initial tests and prognosis do not look good according to Dr. Borras.

"I have to be realistic. I hope it will heal but I have my doubts. There is a chance with this injury that he could be out of the World Cup."

"In the scan we found a little tear in a tendon between the calf and the Achilles tendon. It's a small but difficult injury,” Borras added.

“In principle until Monday there will be nothing more than medical treatment and at that moment we will examine his progress to see if there is a more serious injury."

This is a major blow for the talented 25-year-old defender, who joined Chelsea for £8m from Basque club Athletic Bilbao in June 2005. With all the rumours linking Roberto Carlos with a move to Stamford Bridge, the youngster had felt some pressure on his team-place and was obviously looking forward to the World Cup tournament to further establish himself on the world stage. Earlier this week he told a Spanish press conference,

"I have nothing to say in that respect - I have three years left on my contract with Chelsea and I believe my future is there.”

Last season Del Horno made 25 league appearances from 38 for Chelsea and 4 Champions League appearances, 3 from the bench. At international level he has 10 full international caps, making his debut on 3rd September, 2004 against Scotland.
