MUNICH, Mar 24 (SW) - Bayern Munich have targeted Barcelona’s Mark van Bommel as the ideal replacement for the departing Michael Ballack.

"He is a player that we like. He is not a number 10, not a pure playmaker who scores many goals. But he is a midfielder of high quality and, above all, a good character," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club’s website.

The 28-year-old Dutch midfielder joined Barcelona in the summer, but has been unable to establish himself in Frank Rijkaard’s squad.

"We will find out from his manager and Barcelona if there is a fundamental willingness and a chance that he will move to Bayern. We will look into that in the coming weeks and see," Rummenigge said.

The Bayern chairman also expressed interest in Werder Bremen’s Tim Borowski, but cautioned that any purchase would be capped at around €20 million.

"We will certainly not be paying 50 million or more for a player... Bayern could afford a sum below 20 million without risk," Rummenigge said.

Bayern’s captain Ballack is a free agent in the summer and is certain to depart the Bundesliga, with English champions Chelsea the most probable destination.
