Copa Libertadores: Estudiantes come from three down to claim victory

22 February 2006 07:43

LA PLATA, Feb 22 (SW) - Estudiantes de La Plata claimed an incredible victory in Copa Libertadores action on Tuesday night, coming from three goals behind at half-time to notch a victory over Sporting Cristal. Tigres also came from behind to win an offensive shootout and Newell's Old Boys were victorious.

Group 2

Estudiantes - Sporting Cristal 4-3

Peru's Cristal grabbed a lead in the 17th minute as Jorge Soto slotted home from the penalty spot and he himself extended their lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute.

Amilton Prado's goal in the 38th minute sent the home side to the break down three goals and seemingly out of the match, but the home side had other ideas and came out firing in the second half.

The Argentinian hosts were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute, and José Luís Calderón converted the spot kick to give the home side a jolt they had been lacking throughout the game.

In the 63rd minute, Calderón struck again to pull Estudiantes right back into the game and Mariano Pavone amazingly pulled the home side level with 13 minutes to play, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

But no frenzy compared to what happened with one minute to play in the match as Pablo Luguercio incredibly scored the match winner for Estudiantes, giving them a shock three points after being three down with 45 minutes to play.

Group 3

Newell's Old Boys - Unión Española 2-0

Another Argentinian side, Newell's, didn't have quite the dramatics of Estudiantes, but they satisfied their home supporters with a comfortable win over Chilean challengers Unión Española.

Ignacio Scocco was the man of the match for Newell's as he scored two goals after half-time to fire the home side to victory, including the opener in the 49th minute to give Newell's an initial lead.

Unión hit the crossbar later on in the half and that proved costly as Scocco's header in the 65th minute gave him two goals on the night and his side a bigger lead which they would not relinquish.

Group 4

Tigres - Deportivo Cali 5-4

Colombian side Cali got off to a flying start in this match as Rogelio Rodríguez hit a free kick into the net just 11 minutes in, and Armando Carrillo doubled the advantage for the visitors four minutes later after splitting the Tigres back line.

The Mexicans came back strong as Aldo de Nigris pulled Tigres back into the game just shy of 20 minutes in and then his Brazilian countryman Santos equalized in the 39th minute, only to see Carrillo grab his second of the game with a nice shot, sending the Colombians to the dressing room with a 3-2 advantage.

Tigres came back after the break and equalized again, this time through Carlos Morales and finally took the lead in the 56th minute as the man they call "El Divino", Walter Gaitán, fired into the net for a 4-3 lead.

Gaitán added a second goal to increase Tigres' lead to 5-3 with ten minutes to play and Deportivo went down fighting as Álvaro Domínguez hit a penalty in the 90th minute. It was a shame one team had to go away with no points in a thrilling encounter.
