RENNES, Feb 17 (SW) - Swiss striker Alexander Frei may have to miss out on the Worldcup, as result of surgery that will be performed on the player's groin.

Frei, arguably Switzerland's most influential player with 23 goals in 42 international games, will be sidelined for about twelve weeks and whether he is fit in time for the World Cup remains to be seen.

"We will have to wait and see, after the surgery. But I will try to return as soon as possible. Of course I hope this won't make me miss the World Cup. I tried to make the best choice between my health and my career," the player said.

Frei currently plays for French Ligue 1 side Stade de Rennes, where he scored five goals in 21 matches this season, after having scored 20 and 19 respectively in the two previous seasons.
