ATHENS, Sep 8 (SW) – Greek legend Theo Zagorakis will retire from international football next month.
“For as long as I'm at the federation, I'd want Theodoris at the national team, at any post. It's a fact that he wants to stop,” explained Greek Football Federation President Vassilis Gagatsis.
“He's realised that his time has come. He knows his limits. We're in the process of looking to create a post for him which he'd like to have, too. We want him to be a part of the squad every time it gathers. He was a natural leader.”
The 34-year-old has represented his nation on 118 occasions and will make his final appearance in Athens against Norway in October for a Euro 2008 qualifier.
Zagorakis was one of the outstanding performers at Euro 2004, with his steely resolve in midfield helping him lead his side to an unexpected and shock victory at the tournament.
