ZEIST, Sept 29 (SW) – At a news conference here today Dutch coach Marco van Basten announced his twenty two players for the upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Albania.
Once again Real Madrid’s striker Ruud van Nistelrooy was left out of the Dutch squad.
It may have been retribution for what van Nistelrooy had said about Van Basten earlier in the week when he said that he had probably been left out of the squads since World Cup 2006 for reasons other than those related to football.
Van Basten did make it clear however by saying that this does not mean that it is the end of the road for van Nistelrooy with respect to the Dutch national team. He would expect him (Ruud) to prove him and his critics wrong.
The Netherlands play in Bulgaria on October 7 and Albania at home four days later.
The squad is:
Goalkeepers: Henk Timmer (Feyenoord), Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United)
Defenders: Urby Emanuelson (Ajax Amsterdam), John Heitinga (Ajax Amsterdam), Tim de Cler (AZ Alkmaar), Kew Jaliens (AZ Alkmaar), Joris Mathijsen (SV Hamburg), Andre Ooijer (Blackburn Rovers), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Barcelona), Khalid Boulahrouz (Chelsea)
Midfielders: Wesley Sneijder (Ajax Amsterdam), Stijn Schaars (AZ Alkmaar), Demy de Zeeuw (AZ Alkmaar), Nigel de Jong (SV Hamburg), Denny Landzaat (Wigan Athletic), Mark van Bommel (Bayern Munich)
Forwards: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Ajax Amsterdam), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Ryan Babel (Ajax Amsterdam), Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool), Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (Celtic Glasgow), Arjen Robben (Chelsea)
