Nantes end Marseille streak

24 September 2006 23:49

NANTES, Sep 24 (SW) - Struggling Nantes got a suprising result on Sunday as they ended Marseille's unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 season with a 2-1 victory despite finishing with 10 men.

Dimitri Payet stunned Marseille on 38 minutes as he collected a pass from Mamdou Diallo before striking a perfect effort high into Cédric Carrasso's goal, giving them a lot of momentum going into half-time.

It would get better for the Canaries in the 48th minute as they made it 2-0 on a rebound when Guillaume Norbert slotted home Diallo's shot that initially struck the goalpost.

Nantes were then handed a challenge if they were to claim a great victory when, in the 65th minute, Mauro Cetto was sent off for absuive language toward Carrasso.

Marseille made Nantes sweat when they got a goal from Mamadou Niang in the 78th minute, but a late chance by Samir Nasri flew wide, giving Nantes their first victory of the season.
