Bafana Bafana fail to impress Parreira

3 September 2006 08:01

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 2 (SW) – Despite dominating this qualifying match for the 2008 African Nations Cup Finals, the home side dropped two valuable points when Congo – Brazzaville held them to a goalless draw.

Carlos Alberto Parreira, South Africa’s new coach as from 1 January 2007 must have wondering what he has let himself in for when he watched the South Africans squander chance after chance.

He will certainly be earning his R1.8 million per month (€192 300) in an effort to make Bafana Bafana more competitive when it comes to the World Cup in 2010.

Apart from the lack of strikers, the lack of spectators (8 000) at a stadium that can hold nearly ten times that number, must have concerned him as well.

South Africa’s greatest problem over the past year has been the lack of goals. Local clubs have good strikers, but unfortunately they are nationals from other countries in Africa, the better ones of which have found their mark mainly in Europe.

Credit has to go to the Congolese defence who defended excellently throughout. In the match their defence had thirteen corners with which to contend. The only excitement came in the final twenty minutes when the hosts did manage to squeeze the ball into the net, for it only to be disallowed for offside.

Hardly a match to get anyone excited and a disturbing one for qualification for Africa 2008 and the World Cup in 2010.
