Italian clubs get point relieve

28 October 2006 01:59

ROME, Oct 28 (SW) - Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina have all received a discount on their point deduction by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI). AC Milan have not received further leniency.

The clubs were punished for their involvement in the Italian soccer fraud of last year, with Juve relegated to Serie B with a negative score and Lazio and Fiorentina having to start the season with deductions.

Juventus appealed to the CONI, claiming their punishment was too harsh compared to the other clubs that were involved.

Originally, Juve had to start the competition with minus 17 points, but the committee has scrapped nine of the penalty points, leaving eight. Juventus now climbs to the twelfth spot in the competition.

Lazio and Fiorentina were both eased from penalty points. Lazio gained 8 points (going from minus 11 to minus 3) and Fiorentina was relieved of four negative points, leaving a minus of 15. AC Milan were not spared by the CONI.

Reggina, another club involved, will learn of their fate in a month time.
