PORTO, Oct 7 (SW) - Portugal beat Azerbaijan 3-0 while the Belgians suffered a 1-0 defeat by Serbia. Armenia and Finland held each other to a goalless draw.
Portugal - Azerbaijan 3-0
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the score for Portugal in the 25th minute and Ricardo Carvalho netted the hosts' second, just after the half hour mark.
In the 63rd minute, Ronaldo added another to give the Portuguese a comfortable and expected win.
Serbia - Belgium 1-0
Serbia handed Belgium their first defeat in this qualification campaign. The hosts scored the only goal of the match through Nikola Zigic in the 54th minute.
Kazakhstan - Poland 0-1
In the city of Almaty, Poland needed only one goal to earn three points against Kazakhstan. Seven minutes had been played in the second half when Ebi Smolarek opened the score for the Poles, and the home side failed to react.
Armenia - Finland 0-0
No goals were scored in Yerevan, where Armenia hosted Finland. Despite the draw, Finland are second in Group A. Portugal, currently third, do have a game in hand.
