ZURICH/ALKMAAR, Nov 29 (SW) - Both Sevilla and AZ Alkmaar booked their spots in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup on Wednesday, Sevilla beating Grasshoppers in Group C while AZ Alkmaar came from behind to draw with Slovan Liberec.
Grasshoppers - Sevilla 0-4 The cup holders got off to a flying start in Zurich, taking the lead in the 12th minute when Daniel Alves hit a drive from 20 yards out that flew into the net to give the Spaniards the lead. Another distance drive by Alves, this time time from over 25 yards out, extended Sevilla's lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute before Ernesto Chevantón made it 3-0 nine minutes later from the edge of the area. Kepa then added a fourth goal for the visitors to complete the rout with six minutes left to play. AZ Alkmaar - Slovan Liberec 2-2 AZ looked shaky in their quest to make it to the final 32 of the UEFA Cup, but they got the job done at DSB Stadion despite falling behind Czech side Slovan Liberec in the 26th minute when Tomas Zapotocny headed home Daniel Pudil's corner kick. The 1-0 victory would have secured a berth for Liberec in the next round, but in the 69th minute, Grétar Steinsson put his head to the ball from almost 20 yards out and looped it past Marek Cech to equalize. The Czechs, though, stunned the home crowd when they went in front in the 85th minute through Petr Papousek, reviving the visitors' qualifying hopes, but Julian Jennner struck in the 89th minute to again pull level and send the Dutch side through. Liberec can still qualify for the next round, but they will need Braga to drop points at home against Grasshoppers on Matchday 5. |
