LYON/MADRID, Nov 1 (SW) - Both Olympique de Lyon and Real Madrid achieved narrow home victories in their Champions League games on Wednesday, but for both, this was enough to secure a spot in the next round.
Olympique de Lyon - Dynamo Kiev 1-0
A little less than fifteen minutes had been played at the Gerland stadium of Lyon when the French champions took the lead.
Karim Benzema received the ball from Sidney Govou and beat goalkeeper Shovkovskiy to set the score to 1-0 and close in on the second round.
Overall, Lyon dominated the match and did not allow their Ukranian guests to find their way back into the game, profesionally defending their narrow lead. A win was enough for the French to secure their spot in the next round.
Sylvain Wiltord had a good chance in the 83rd minute, but the former international player failed to deliver a good strike after receiving the ball from Källström.
Real Madrid - Steaua Bucharest 1-0
As expected, Real Madrid were the better since in the first half at Santiago Bernabeu but the Spaniards failed to break the deadlock.
The best chance before the break came after about forty minutes when Ruud van Nistelrooy would have had only the goalkeeper to beat if Robinho had managed to find the Dutchman from the left wing. However, the Brazilian's cross was too sharp and was easily cleared by a defender.
In the 66th minute, the hosts were close again as a long ball from substitute David Beckham was headed just over the crossbar by Sergio Ramos.
But disaster struck for the Romanians in the 71st minute. A backpass from Banel Nicolita came at the wrong moment as goalkeeper Cernea was not standing in front of his goal, and the ball rolled in for 1-0.
Minutes later, Madrid had a perfect opportunity to double the lead as Ruud van Nistelrooy was brought down by Cernea, but the Dutch striker missed the target from the penalty spot.
But the single goal was enough to allow the home crowd to celebrate in the end, as Real Madrid join Lyon in the next round.
Lyon have twelve points and Real Madrid have nine, while Steaua are currently stuck at three. Although the Romanians could still share the second spot with Real Madrid at the end of this round, the Spanish have a head-to-head advantage. Dynamo Kiev failed to earn any points so far.
