Spain: Sevilla beat Barcelona, Espanyol survive in La Liga

SEVILLA, May 13 (SW) - Sevilla are close to a spot in the Champions League after beating Barcelona 3-2 in the south of Spain. A late goal from Espanyol meanwhile, had the Barcelona based team survive while sinking Alavés.

Sevilla - Barcelona 3-2

Barcelona travelled to Andalucia without eight of their most influential players. This was taken advantage of by the hosts, who took a secure lead with goals from Alves Daniel in the 22nd minute and Aitor Ocio in the 76th.

But Barcelona came back through Santiago Ezquerro in the 41st minute and Sylvinho in the 43rd. However. Sevilla had some energy left and Kepa got the winning goal in the 76th minute.

Gabri was sent off for the visitors in the dying minutes, leaving Barcelona with just ten players.

Sevilla are now fourth, which gives access to the Champions League third preliminary round. The Andalucians share this position with Osasuna, as both have 65 points. On Tuesday, Sevilla face Real Madrid while Osasuna host Valencia.

Celta de Vigo - Getafe 1-0

Celta are out of the race for Champions League participation, and will be finishing sixth. The Galicians did beat Getafe 1-0 thanks to a goal from Pablo Contreras in the 23rd minute. The visitors had Mario Andres Pernia sent off in the 86th minute.

Alavés - Deportivo la Coruña 1-0

Alavés will be spending next season in the Segunda División, but won their last match of the season, 1-0 against Deportivo. the only goal of the game was scored by Rodolfo Bopido in the 78th minute.

For a long time, Alavés did seem to survive in the top flight, but the result of the match between Espanyol and Real Sociedad eventually had a different outcome.

Espanyol - Real Sociedad 1-0

Espanyol survived, albeit only just. The 'second' team from Barcelona needed a win to get away from the relegation zone, and got exactly that. But the team needed until the 90th minute to finally break the deadlock, with a high-value goal from Coro.

Villarreal - Racing Santander 2-0

Villarreal end their season with a 2-0 win over Racing de Santander. Argentinian Juan Roman Riquelme opened the score from the penalty spot in the 30th minute, and a second goal was added by Xisco Nadal in the 61st.

Atletico de Madrid - Real Betis 1-1

Serb striker Mateja Kezman put Atletico in the lead after 24 minutes, but their guests came back as Arzu got the equalizer in the 76th.

Real Mallorca - Zaragoza 3-1

Mallorca earned three points with a 3-1 win over Zaragoza. Juan Fernando Arango, Francisco Javier Farinos and Yordi took care of the home side's goals, while Savio got the only goal for Zaragoza.

Cadiz - Malaga 5-0

The bottom two of the Primera División faced each other for their final match at this level, and Cádiz humiliated last-placed Malaga by beating their fellow Andalucians 5-0.

The goals came from Matias Pavoni, Jonathan Sesma (2), Fabian Estoyanoff and Nenad Mirosavljevic.
