BRUSSELS, May 13 (SW) - Zulte-Waregem have won the 2006 edition of the Belgian Cup, beating Excelsior Mouscron 2-1 in the final.
The two teams, of which one would certain win its first ever Belgian Cup, faced each other in the nation's capital city, Brussels.
Eleven minutes had passed when Stefan Leleu headed home from a Tim Matthys free kick, putting Zulte-Waregem in the lead.
In the 62nd minute, Mouscron levelled as Marcin Zewlakow had a shot blocked by Pieter Merlier, but was then able to provide Adnan Custovic with the opportunity to score for 1-1.
But the winner came from Zulte, as Matthys scored from a free kick in the 90th minute. This free kick was caused by a Toyes foul on Meert, just outside the penalty area.
Zulte win their first cup trophy and qualify for next season's UEFA Cup. Mouscron meanwhile, played and lost their second cup final. In 2002, the side lost 3-1 to Brugge.
