BRUSSELS, May 5 (SW) - RSC Anderlecht have won the Belgian league title for the 28th time, beating Zulte-Waregem 3-0 while Standard Liege crashed to a 0-2 defeat by Gent.
Anderlecht - Zulte-Waregem 3-0
On the final day, Anderlecht had a two-points advantage over Standard to defend so a win over Zulte would certainly secure the title.
Four minutes before the half time whistle, Lamine Traore broke the deadlock for the leaders and Hannu Tihinen doubled the gap in the 54th minute.
Frederic Dindeleux scored an own goal in the 64th minute, setting the score to 3-0.
The title is Anderlecht's 28th ever, with which they have a staggering fifteen more than Club Brugge. Anderlecht's first league trophy was won in 1949, and the most recent victory came in 2004.
This year's Jupiler League was as exciting as it gets, as Anderlecht faced strong competition from Standard. The Liege-based team even spent several weeks in first position, but Anderlecht eventually surpassed their main rivals.
Standard Liege - Gent 0-2
Standard lost their last match and the championship, but will look back on a good season as the team qualifies for the third preliminary round of the Champions League.
Gent took the lead through Christophe Gregoire in the 23rd minute, prematurely taking away Standard's hope for a positive outcome. Nebojsa Pavlovic added a second, eight minutes later.
Club Brugge - Genk 3-0
Club Brugge will appear in next year's UEFA Cup tournament. Against Genk, last year's champions achieved a 3-0 win. Bosko Balaban scored in the 37th and 62nd minutes (second goal was a penalty), and Philippe Clement got the third in the 82nd.
Lokeren - Germinal Beerschot 1-2
Germinal Beerschot took a secure lead with goals from Tosin Dosunmu in the 38th minute and Jurgen Cavens in the 64th. Lokeren got one back through Besnik Hasi in the 72nd minute, but failed to net an equalizer.
Sint-Truiden - FC Brussels 0-1
Sint-Truiden hosted FC Brussels and suffered a 0-1 defeat. The only goal came from Richard Culek, who converted a penalty kick in the 32nd minute.
Westerlo - La Louviere 2-1
La Louviere, last in the league, have been relegated to the third division due to fiancial problems. Their last match at the top level had a 2-1 defeat as result, with Christiaan Janssens and Wim Mennes scoring for Westerlo while Ace Stojkov got the only goal for the guests.
Charleroi - Cercle Brugge 0-1
The only goal of the match between Charleroi and Cercle Brugge came from Stijn de Smet in the 53rd minute, giving Cercle Brugge a narrow win in the south of the country.
Lierse - Roeselare 1-0
Dragan Mrdja put Lierse in the lead after twelve minutes, and for a long time this win seemed to be enough to avoid ending up in a promotion-relegation competition with three second division teams.
However, Lierse depended on the result of the match between Beveren and Excelsior Mouscron.
Beveren - Excelsior Mouscron 1-0
Beveren needed to beat Mouscron in order to stay ahead of Lierse and survive in the Eerste Klasse. And the deciding goal eventually did come, and was scored by Mohammed Diallo in the 88th minute.
