NUREMBERG, June 13 (SW) - Iranian captain Ali Daei is doubtful for Iran’s group D clash with Portugal on Saturday 17th June, due to a back injury. Striker Daei picked up a knock during Iran’s 3-1 defeat to Mexico on Sunday and now looks a serious doubt for the Frankfurt match.
"Ali did not train on Monday because of a back injury. It will be very hard for him to face Portugal. We have to see but I don't think he can play, “ said Iranian coach Branko Ivankovic.
37-year-old Daei made history in 2004 by becoming the first player to reach 100 international goals, and his tally now stands at 109 goals from 147 international matches, making him the top international goal-scorer in the history of the game.
Daei has now returned to the Middle East for the final years of his career, playing for Iranian club Saba Battery. He has previously had spells with Bayern Munich and Hertha Berlin.
