BERLIN, Jul 10 (SW) - Despite losing the final and his red card during that match, Zinedine Zidane has won the Golden Ball as best player of the tournament.
The playmaker, who has now ended his career as professional player, was given 2012 points in the elections. Fabio Cannavaro finished second with 1977 and Andrea Pirlo third with 715 points.
Zidane succeeds Oliver Kahn, who won the trophy in 2002, also as losing finalist.
Gianluigi Buffon has been named best goalkeeper of the tournament, having allowed only two goals: An own goal and a penalty kick.
