NANCY, Jan 14 (SW) - Despite playing without the injured Juninho, four-time reigning French champions Lyon maintained their stranglehold on Ligue 1 with a tense win at Nancy. Elsewhere, Bordeaux spoiled what might have been a festive night in Monaco with a win.
Nancy - Lyon 0-2
Lyon maintained their 14-point lead, but didn't get on the scoresheet until the 49th minute when Claudio Caçapa took a pass back from Karim Benzema and fired past goalkeeper Gennaro Bracigliano.
Fred, who is enjoying a breakout season of his own, sealed the victory with six minutes to play when he got his head to a Sylvain Wiltord corner and put it into the goal.
Monaco - Bordeaux 0-1
Second-placed Bordeaux spoiled the Monaco debut of Christian Vieri as they gave a solid performance at the Stade Louis II to run out with a win.
The lone goal of the match came in the 70th minute after an error by defender Eric Cubilier allowed Denilson to eventually put past goalkeeper Guillaume Warmuz for the winner.
Auxerre - Lens 1-0
Auxerre remain a single point adrift of Bordeaux as they won a tight affair with sixth-placed Lens at the Stade l'Abbé-Deschamps.
Jacques Santini's men got the winner just shy of the half-time interval when Peguy Luyindula managed to find the rear of the Lens goal.
Lille - Sochaux 3-0
Lille were the biggest winners of the day as they crushed Sochaux to stay three points back of second place.
Matt Moussilou had the French side on the scoreboard within the first minute of the match, and Romain Pitau's own goal sent Lille to the dressing room with a two-goal advantage.
Ten minutes after the restart, Swiss international Daniel Gygax sealed the points with Lille's third of the match.
Strasbourg - Metz 2-1
Strasbourg jumped off the bottom of the table with just their second win of the year, a victory over second-from-bottom Metz.
Ulrich Le Pen put the home side in front from the penalty spot in the 11th minute and Pascal Johansen doubled the lead in the 36th.
Metz got within a goal with three minutes to play through Hervé Tum, but they got no closer.
Le Mans - Ajaccio 1-0
Strasbourg's win sent Ajaccio to the foot of the table as they fell away to Le Mans.
The home side needed just one goal to do the deed and it came at the death through an unlikely source. Ajaccio's Antonio Carlos misguided the ball into his own net, gifting Le Mans three points.
Nantes - Nice 0-0
Nantes and Nice are well away from the relegation zone, but their stalemate was something that resemebled a relegation showdown as neither side got much going in the way of offense.
